SECTIONAL APPENDIX - BATH GREEN PARK
------------------------------------

General
-------

This simulation recreates railway operation at Bath Green Park, prior to its closure in 1966.

The signalmen at Bath Station and at Bath Junction would have needed to work together closely. To reflect this, the operator of this simulation is in charge of the operation of both boxes, together with a number of ground frames, as if they were one signalbox. This has resulted in the need to renumber many of the levers.

For clarity of display, signals controlling junctions are represented by a single signal and lever Number. In practice two or more separate semaphore arms were provided. Similarly, separate calling on arms are not shown although their functions are provided.

Apart from this, we have tried to be as faithful to the original as possible, though quite a few compromises were required. However, it is believed that much of the essence, and atmosphere, of Bath Green Park has been captured.

The comprehensive screen display, with (anachronistic) train describers, to some extent compensates for the absence of the view from the signalbox windows!

Platform Lines
--------------

Passenger and other trains of classes 1,2,3 and 5 may use either of the 2 platforms. The lengths of platforms, i.e. the number of coaches and/or locos which can be held, are as follows:

    Platform Length
    -------- ------

   1 (South) 12

   2 (North):
        Full length 10
        Stopping short of
           loco release crossover 6
Between crossover and buffer stops 2

These capacities are greater than the prototype, in which trains of this length were handled, with coaches standing beyond the platform ends.

Permissive working of trains of classes 1,2,3 and 5 is permitted on platform lines - i.e. 2 trains may use the same platform, subject to capacity.

Sidings and Loops
-----------------

The capacities of sidings, measured in coach (or loco) lengths, are as follows. Allow 1 coach length for each 2 goods wagons.

    Siding Within/between Signals Length

Wrong Direction Movements
-------------------------

These are not permitted for scheduled passenger and other trains of classes 1,2,3 and 5.

Motive Power and Stock
----------------------

The PC-RAIL software does not distinguish between types of locomotive. However, greater realism will result if the user ensures that locos are used appropriately. Specific motive power may be allocated to trains using the Motive Power Manager.

Push-pull working is permitted, where trains are so designated. No coupling or uncoupling is permitted for push-pull trains.

Loco Sheds
----------

In most cases, locos on trains arriving at Green Park would proceed to the loco sheds for coal, water and turning.

The turntable was located at the entrance to the Midland shed, but the S&D shed was used as the running shed. Therefore locos would visit both. In the simulation, you may send locos to either shed.

Locos ready for service were often stored in the Gas Sidings, especially on Summer Saturdays.

Light engine movements
----------------------

Much of the operating complexity arises from the movement of locos between the loco sheds and the station. These movements are included in the working timetable. Pilot locos are also provided for shunting movements.

On arrival of a train at the station, the loco is uncoupled and is allocated an 0Znn reporting number. The operator should redescribe it with the correct reporting number for the scheduled movement to the sheds. If required, it can be moved before the time stated in the working timetable.

Trains arriving at the North platform will, if possible, stop short of no.67 crossover which may be used to release the loco if required.

Do not send any "spare" locos to shed as they will be needed.

Freight Movements
-----------------

Trains from the Branch normally proceeded by the Up Shunting Line, then into the Goods Yard. Trains from the Main Line proceeded on the Down Passenger line until they were beyond signal 19, then shunted back behind signal 28, thence via no.29 crossover towards the Goods Yard.

In the simulation, trains may be hauled directly into the Goods Yard. In reality, it was normal practice, at signal 47, to remove the train loco. This was sent to the Midland shed turntable. The pilot loco, which was berthed in the shunt spur at Bath Junction, then propelled the freight train into the yard.

Classes of Train
----------------

For consistency with other PC-RAIL simulations, the classification used by B.R. in recent years has been followed, although there are differences compared to the scheme used prior to the closure of Bath Green Park.

         1 Express Passenger
         2 Ordinary Passenger
         3 Parcels (Max. 90 mph)
         4 Freight (Max. 65 mph)
         5 Empty Coaching Stock
         6 Freight (Max. 50-60 mph)
         7 Freight (Max. 40-45 mph)
         8 Freight (Max. 35 mph)
         9 Unfitted Freight
         0 Light Engine
