CONTROLLED AREA

This consists of the station area, the approaches on the West Coast Main Line (North and South), the diverging lines to Manchester (NW), Chester (NE), Shrewsbury (SW) and the Potteries (SE), and the access lines to the Diesel Maintenance Depot, Motorail Terminal, Crewe Carriage Sheds and the South Yard. The Electric Traction Maintenace Depot is reached via the Chester line. The Independent lines, used by most freight traffic, are not included in the controlled area.

RUNNING AND PLATFORM LINES

All lines between Crewe North Junction and Crewe South Junction, including all platform lines, are signalled for bidirectional working, together with the Potteries lines and a further length of the Up Salop line.

Passenger and other trains of classes 1,2,3 and 5 may use any of the platforms. The capacity of platforms is as follows:

Permissive working of trains of classes 1,2,3 and 5 is permitted on platform lines - i.e. 2 trains may use the same platform, subject to capacity. 
   
Freight trains may terminate or originate from the South Yard and Motorail Sidings. They may also use the station platforms for short stops, but may not terminate or originate there.					   

Scheduled light engine movements may stop at and also terminate/originate in the platforms. Light locos can also terminate and originate at the DMD. 

Empty coaching stock trains (Class 5) may terminate or originate from the Carriage Sheds, South Yard, or the DMD.

Wrong Direction movements over running lines not signalled for bi-directional working are NOT permitted for scheduled passenger and other trains of classes 1,2,3 and 5.
