SECTIONAL APPENDIX - ELY NORTH JUNCTION
---------------------------------------

General
-------

Ely North Junction forms the intersection of the Peterborough, Kings Lynn and Norwich lines of the former Great Eastern Railway company. The Ely North Junction signalbox featured in this simulation opened in 1926, replacing three older boxes (Ely N. Junction, Ely W. Junction and Queen Adelaide) when sidings were installed for the adjacent sugar beet factory.

It was build by Messsrs. Elkins and Co. for the sum of 1,295. The locking frame, which was second-hand when installed, was originally built by McKenzie and Holland in 1890, but its earlier history is not known.

The replacement of the three boxes was part of a major resignallng scheme for the area which coincided with the enlargement of Whitemoor yards at March.

The box closed on 25th April 1992, when Cambridge Power Box took over control of the area.

Signalling arrangements have been taken from signalling diagrams dated 1958. The early colour light signals (levers 11/68, 40 and B) beyond West Junction have however been depicted as semaphore signals.

All line were worked by Absolute Block.

The adjacent boxes are:

Ely Station North 1.3 mls
Padnal Crossing 1.4 mls (Norwich line)
Littleport 4.2 mls (Kings Lynn line)
Chettisham 1.9 mls (March line)

Operating Notes

Up March line Signal 12 or 69
