The start-up photograph shows ex-GWR Castle Class locomotive number 5061 - Earl of Birkenhead with a train of mixed stock. It is travelling North on the line from Wellington and is passing the massive 180-lever Severn Bridge Junction signal box just prior to entering Shrewsbury station. The photograph was taken by the late Keith Smith and is used here by courtesy of Norman Kneale, to whom I am greatly indebted. Whilst the photograph is undated, it is thought to have been taken at some time in the 1950's. Severn Bridge Junction box is still in service and is believed to be the largest surviving mechanical signal box in the world.
